Harnessing the Food and Raw Material Potential of Salicornia Species in Africa

Salicornia spp., a genus of halophytic plants adapted to saline environments, present a multifaceted opportunity to address food security and environmental challenges in Africa. This chapter describes the nutritional, therapeutic, industrial, and ecological applications of this plant, highlighting its value as a mineral-rich vegetable and dietary salt substitute enriched with bioactive phytochemicals, such as polyphenols and flavonoids. The medicinal properties of Salicornia include antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardiovascular, and metabolic effects, with emerging relevance for pharmaceutical and nutraceutical development. Industrially, its high biomass and oil-rich seeds offer the potential for the production of biofuels, biodegradable plastics, cosmetics, and fodder. Environmentally, Salicornia contributes to soil desalination, phytoremediation, carbon sequestration, biofiltration, and wastewater treatment, reinforcing its role in sustainable agroecosystems. Although extensive studies from Europe, the Middle East, and Asia have elucidated these attributes, empirical research within the African context remains sparse and constrained by taxonomic ambiguities, inadequate agronomic protocols, underdeveloped value chains, research funding deficits, and policy gaps. This chapter underscores that the direct extrapolation of foreign data is insufficient; unlocking Salicornia’s potential in Africa necessitates germplasm collection, breeding of locally adapted varieties, comprehensive nutritional profiling, and region-specific clinical validation of health benefits. Ultimately, this work advocates for coordinated, continent-wide research, policy support, and market development to harness Salicornia spp. as a climate-resilient crop that contributes to food security, economic development, and environmental sustainability in Africa.
