Breaking the Cycle of Vulnerability: Climate Crises and Public Health Challenges in Bangladesh

Bangladesh, one of the nation’s most vulnerable to climate change, faces escalating public health challenges as environmental crises intensify. This study explores the multifaceted health impacts of climate change, including direct effects such as heatwaves, air pollution, and the rising prevalence of vector-borne diseases, as well as indirect consequences like mental health burdens and disruptions to food security. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and low-income populations, are disproportionately affected, exacerbating existing health inequities. While Bangladesh has developed policies such as the Health National Adaptation Plan (HNAP) and the Climate Change Strategy and Action Plan, these frameworks primarily focus on disaster response and lack comprehensive preventive measures. Key gaps include limited integration of mental health, insufficient cross-sectoral coordination, and underrepresentation of marginalized communities in adaptation strategies. Additionally, challenges such as inadequate funding, corruption, and weak infrastructure further hinder effective implementation. This research highlights the urgent need for a robust, climate-resilient healthcare system that aligns with international frameworks like the Paris Agreement. Proposed strategies include developing a comprehensive HNAP with a focus on preventive measures, strengthening institutional capacity, and investing in sustainable healthcare infrastructure. Enhanced disease surveillance, integration of mental health services, workforce training, and community engagement are emphasized to ensure equitable healthcare delivery. Addressing governance issues, the study calls for transparent funding mechanisms, robust monitoring, and data-driven decision-making to bridge existing gaps. By adopting a holistic, inclusive approach that prioritizes vulnerable populations and leverages global best practices, Bangladesh can mitigate the health impacts of climate change and build resilience for future challenges. This study provides actionable insights to guide policymakers in achieving sustainable public health outcomes.
