Harnessing Nitrogen Fixation: Strategies for Climate-Resilient Agriculture

摘要

Nitrogen is an essential nutrient for plant growth and a key factor in achieving higher crop yields. Traditionally, synthetic fertilizers have been the main nitrogen source, but excessive dependence on them has led to soil degradation, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, and climate change. Alternative nitrogen sources such as organic manure, biofertilizers, and biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) offer more sustainable options. BNF, carried out by certain microorganisms, naturally converts atmospheric nitrogen into plant-usable forms, reducing the need for chemical fertilizers. However, its use has declined with the rise of high-yielding varieties reliant on synthetic inputs. Sustainable nitrogen management is therefore crucial to balance productivity with environmental protection. BNF enhances soil fertility, reduces external inputs, and promotes eco-friendly farming systems that are more resilient to climate change. This chapter focuses on the significance of nitrogen fixation as a sustainable strategy for crop production, its role in ensuring food security, and its potential to restore soil and ecosystem health. It also discusses methods to enhance nitrogen fixation in both leguminous and non-leguminous crops, emphasizing how adopting microbial-based nitrogen inputs can transform modern agriculture toward greater sustainability and long-term ecological balance.
