Microbial Consortia of Diazotrophs in Agriculture: Synergistic Approaches for Soil and Plant Health

The excessive application of chemical pesticides and fertilizers spurred on by agricultural intensification has a detrimental impact on crop quality, nutritional value, soil health, and eventually human health because of the buildup of harmful residues. A dynamic microhabitat full of advantageous microbial communities, the plant rhizosphere aids in nutrient uptake, disease prevention, stress reduction, and plant growth promotion. Among these, diazotrophic bacteria—microbes that can fix nitrogen from the atmosphere—are essential to plant nutrition and the natural cycle of nitrogen. When incorporated into microbial consortia, diazotrophs function in collaboration with mycorrhizal fungi and other plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria to improve soil health and structure and promote hormone production. These partnerships serve as potent bioformulations that can be applied to non-legume and cereal crops, providing a sustainable substitute for chemical inputs. The ecological roles and mechanisms of diazotrophic microbial consortia in the rhizosphere are examined in this chapter, with a focus on how they enhance soil fertility, support long-term agricultural sustainability, and foster plant health. This chapter attempts to shed light on the creation of efficient microbial formulations for robust and fruitful agroecosystems by unraveling the interacting networks found in the plant microbiome, particularly in the rhizosphere.
