Challenges in Enhancing Biological Nitrogen Fixation in Non-Leguminous Crops

Associations of diazotrophs with non-leguminous crops are beneficial for agriculture as they increase the nitrogen (N2) status of soil. New technologies increase possibilities to make such types of associations effectively. Spontaneous associations provide a potential benefit through nitrogen (N2) fixation, and it is a rarely manageable part of agriculture. For raising the nitrogen content in dry land areas, these associations give a wonderful result. If we make an association of nodules with the roots of cereal crops like wheat and rice with free-living diazotrophs like azospirilla, rhizobia symbiotically, we raise the N2 status. Free-living diazotrophs such as Azospirillum, Azotobacter, and certain strains of Rhizobium can form beneficial relationships with the roots of cereal crops like wheat, maize, and rice. These microorganisms not only fix atmospheric nitrogen but also help in root growth, improve water and nutrient uptake, and enhance overall plant strength and health. Encouraging such biofertilizer-based practices reduces the dependence on chemical fertilizers, lowers environmental pollution, and supports sustainable agricultural productivity.
