Diazotrophic Plant Growth Promoting Microorganisms Are a Key to Soil Health and Productivity

摘要

Soil health is the foundation of sustainable agriculture, and plant productivity is closely tied to the nutrient dynamics and microbial ecology of the soil. Among the diverse group of microbial populations that interact with plants, diazotrophic microorganisms, which are free-living organisms found in soil and responsible for converting atmospheric nitrogen into available forms that are beneficial to plant growth, development, and health, thereby enhancing crop yield and quality. This chapter highlights the importance of multiple plant growth-promoting soil microorganisms (PGPSMs), including bacteria, fungi, cyanobacteria, and protozoa, which are abundant in fertile soils and have garnered significant attention for their ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen and enhance plant growth. These beneficial microbes not only reduce the dependence on synthetic fertilizers but also improve soil structure, nutrient cycling through mineralization can positively impact the growth, development, and health of crop plants. However, some crucial key factors, such as nitrogen fixation, nutrient solubilization, and increasing crop resilience. This chapter concluded that PGPSMs offer a promising avenue for enhancing both the sustainability and productivity of crop cultivation, laying the groundwork for future research and practical applications in agriculture and environmental sustainability.
