Periorbital Implants in the Aesthetic Patient

An operation to augment the malar region can be challenging. An individual’s facial appearance and ability to chew are determined by the functional anatomy of their skeletal bones, including the maxilla, mandible, and zygomatic complex. An oral contouring procedure utilizing graft materials may be successful in cases involving significant bony defects that require augmentation surgery. Prostheses made of alloplastic materials are convenient and less invasive than conventional methods, which can lead to morbidity at the donor’s site. Alloplastic implants are used in most malar augmentations. Using these implants can result in infection, malposition, and tissue reaction. The use of CAD-CAM technology and titanium 3D printing has allowed titanium implants to be tailored to meet the needs of individual patients. If bony evidence is minimal, hyaluronic acid fillers can be used. Due to its limited volume and injection site, this might not be a permanent solution. Nerve injury, orbital floor fracture, and damage to the oral cavity have been reported as complications of malar augmentation. 3D printers for surgical guides can help avoid these complications. The other clinical appropriateness requires more clinical trials or animal experiments.
