Injury Risks Among Novice Swimmers Due to Incorrect Techniques: An Observation of Pilot Study

Introduction: The speed and energy efficiency of the freestyle or front crawl make it one of the most popular swimming strokes. Nonetheless, poor technique can result in subpar performance and a high risk of overuse injuries, particularly for inexperienced swimmers. Poor biomechanics from repeated movement can aggravate lower back pain, neck strain, and shoulder impingement. Therefore, it’s critical to spot improper swimming patterns early on in order to lower the risk of injury and increase stroke efficiency. Objective: Determine the most frequent technical mistakes made by inexperienced swimmers when swimming freestyle and investigate the possible risks of injury resulting from those mistakes. Methods: Five novice swimmers, ages 19 to 25, were monitored as they swim 25 m freestyle. Motion analysis software from Kinovea was used to record and examine each swimmer. Technical elements like body alignment, elbow and knee angles, and other measurements are compared to identified biomechanical standards for appropriate freestyle technique. Results: The five swimmers all performed important technical errors such as inconsistent kicking, limited trunk rotation, and delayed arm recovery. Increased mechanical stress on the neck, lower back, and shoulder was linked to these defects, indicating a higher chance of musculoskeletal pain. Findings: Novice swimmers frequently use improper freestyle technique, which puts them at risk for injury. In order to guarantee safe, effective, and injury-free improvement in swimming performance, early technical correction supported by biomechanical feedback is crucial.
