The Misconception of Ideal Running Form: A Case for Personalized Biomechanics

摘要

The widespread belief in a singular, ideal running form typically modelled after elite athletes has shaped much of the coaching, training, and recreational running culture. However, this paradigm neglects extensive biomechanical, physiological, and anthropometric variability that defines the majority of the global running population. This discussion paper challenges the validity of elite-derived biomechanics as a universal standard and argues for a shift toward personalized running form optimization. Drawing from current literature and performance data, the paper contrasts elite and amateur runners across key domains such as stride mechanics, limb proportions, tendon stiffness, and energy efficiency. It highlights the limitations of applying elite models to recreational runners, particularly those from populations with significantly different body types, such as Southeast Asians. Personalized approaches anchored in individualized assessment, biomechanical feedback, and strength and mobility conditioning are proposed as safer and more effective alternatives. By acknowledging each runner’s unique physiological ceiling and self-optimizing tendencies, this paper calls for an inclusive, evidence-based framework that promotes sustainable performance and reduces injury risk. In dispelling the misconception of a one-size-fits-all model, this work advocates for empowering every runner to achieve biomechanical efficiency within the boundaries of their own bodies.
