New Innovation Hubs are Possible

Shenzhen innovation cluster, as an important global innovation hub, is the first and foremost significant innovation cluster that originated from the global south. Shenzhen’s trajectory offers aspiring innovation clusters a fundamental lesson: A strong understanding of the local cultures, institutions, governance, challenges and opportunities can enable and support the development of technological solutions and the building of innovation clusters that satisfy local and national needs. This chapter summarizes key lessons learned from Shenzhen's development and innovation success while pointing out challenges ahead of Shenzhen’s continuing journey. Policy implications for the West and global south countries that can gain from China’s leading innovation cluster areoffered.
