Nature-Based Remediation of Takiaghat Drain: A Case Study of Gorakhpur Municipal Corporation

The world is grappling for clean resources as the depletion of freshwater resources continues to be an area of concern for both public and the governing authorities. The 3-km-long Takia Ghat drain in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, originates from the Ilahi Bagh area and drains into the Rapti River. The river is a critical source of fishing, drinking water, and irrigation for the local population. The discharge of greywater into the Takia Ghat drain drew the attention of authorities, prompting them to seek nature-based solutions that would revive traditional Indian water conservation methods. The concept of “Constructed Wetlands” was applied in consultation and the project was completed in 1/160th the cost of conventional methods of wastewater treatment. This chapter explores nature-based remediation methods for wastewater treatment and their crucial role in addressing the pressing issue of wastewater management. It lays emphasis on the case study of Municipal Corporation Gorakhpur, highlighting the successful implementation of one of these solutions. Nature-based solutions, such as constructed wetlands, water harvesting and ecosystem restoration, offer sustainable pathways to restore and manage freshwater ecosystems, ensuring their protection for future generations.
