Enabling the Detection of Shallowly Buried Trash in Sandy Land with IR-UWB Radar

This paper designs and implements a low cost and easily deployable system for detecting shallowly buried trash in sandy land based on commercial IR-UWB radar. In our system, an unmanned vehicle carries a commercial IR-UWB radar, and the vehicle-mounted radar scans the sandy land and analyzes the received radar signal to detect and locate the shallowly buried trash. Experimental results show that the system realizes a detection accuracy of 92.3% with the radar placed at 75 cm from the ground. In the ground parallel direction, the system can detect trash as far as 4.2 m away from the radar. Within the range of 4.5 m \(^2\) , the system can detect and locate up to 9 trash at the same time.
