摘要

The postpartum period is an important time for patients with autoimmune rheumatic diseases (AIRDs). Those with pre-existing diagnoses can have an increased risk of disease flare and other postpartum complications for both mother and baby. Disease flare and the onset of new AIRDs can mimic common symptoms of pregnancy and the postpartum period; however, identifying relevant clues can point the clinician in the right direction to unveil the underlying etiology and guide patient care. Special considerations are applicable when determining postpartum medication management, future pregnancy planning, including contraception options, and infant feeding practices. Due to the complexity of some of these issues, a multidisciplinary approach comprising clinicians (rheumatologists, obstetricians, primary care providers) and allied health professionals (occupational therapists, physical therapists, mental health providers) is encouraged to optimize outcomes for the parents and infant.
