摘要

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), which encapsulates 5000 years of healthcare knowledge, has shown distinct benefits in addressing chronic illnesses and complex health issues through its comprehensive methodology and diagnostic system based on syndrome differentiation. Nevertheless, as globalization and scientific advancements progress, TCM encounters considerable obstacles in its modernization efforts. The uncertainty regarding active compounds, the complex nature of their mechanisms, and the subjective nature of effectiveness assessments, along with other traditional cognitive frameworks, have resulted in a significant disconnect from the precise ingredients, targets, and mechanisms that contemporary medicine demands. This disparity not only hinders the global acceptance of TCM but also affects the scientific recognition of traditional medicine within today’s healthcare landscape. In this scenario, metabolomics, a vital area of systems biology characterized by its comprehensive and dynamic research approach, is emerging as a pivotal tool to unravel the scientific foundations of TCM, thus paving the way for a new research framework aimed at modernizing traditional medicine (Fig. 10.1).
