Overview of Metabolomics in Precision Medicine

Metabolomics emerged as a discipline in the late 1990s and has since been widely applied across various fields such as biology, medicine, microbiology, and environmental science. In medical research, metabolomics primarily examines how endogenous metabolites in organisms, organs, tissues, or cells change in response to internal or external factors. The Chinese edition of Metabolomics and Precision Medicine reviewed research advances up to 2019, whereas this book focuses on key developments from the past 5 years. This chapter aims to provide an overview of recent research trends, disciplinary progress, current challenges, as well as emerging subfields and technologies in metabolomics within the context of precision medicine over the last 5 years.
