Conclusions: Patterns, Principles, and Practical Implications for Doctoral Theorizing

The concluding chapter synthesizes cross-cutting insights from the 21 doctoral cases to identify patterns, principles, and practical heuristics for defensible theorizing in doctoral research. It argues that the strongest chapters treat theory selection as an explicit reasoning process. That is, linking the explanatory task to the framework’s conceptual reach and operational consequences, rather than as a naming exercise. Three recurring themes are emphasized. First, many contemporary problems require multilevel explanations of agency, structure, and context, drawing on frameworks that can model temporality and situated action. Second, principled hybridization is often necessary, particularly in AI-mediated environments, where cognition, tool use, institutional constraints, and equity considerations interact, making integrated frameworks a defensible outcome when their “division of labor” is clearly specified. Third, context is frequently part of the phenomenon, not background, and transfer is strengthened when contextual mechanisms are theorized rather than bracketed. The chapter concludes with implications for doctoral students, supervisors, and curriculum design, proposing evaluative questions and a concise heuristic for auditing alignment from theory to research questions, data, analysis, and warranted claims.
