Integrating Civic Engagement and Service Learning to Strengthen Tolerance and Multiculturalism in Indonesia’s National Identity in Higher Education

This research aims to examine the integration of Civic Engagement and Service Learning in higher education as a strategy to strengthen tolerance and multiculturalism in building Indonesia’s national identity. The research was conducted at two universities, namely Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Syekh Nurjati Cirebon and Jambi University, which have different cultural and social backgrounds. The primary goal of this study is to analyze how these two approaches can strengthen the values of tolerance and multiculturalism among students as part of the formation of an inclusive national identity. The research questions addressed in this study are: (1) How can the implementation of Civic Engagement in higher education enhance students’ understanding and practice of tolerance? (2) To what extent can Service Learning strengthen multicultural attitudes within the academic environment? (3) How can the integration of both concepts support the development of a more pluralistic and harmonious Indonesian national identity? The research uses a qualitative approach with a case study design at UIN Syekh Nurjati and Jambi University. Data collection techniques include in-depth interviews with students, lecturers, and program administrators, as well as participatory observation of Civic Engagement and Service Learning activities carried out at both universities. Data analysis was conducted thematically to explore the understanding and impact of these programs on students’ attitudes toward tolerance and multiculturalism. The findings show that the integration of Civic Engagement and Service Learning at both universities significantly contributes to enhancing students’ understanding of cultural diversity and encourages them to be more tolerant of differences. These two approaches have proven effective in creating an inclusive academic environment, which in turn strengthens Indonesia’s pluralistic and harmonious national identity.
