Translation of Words and Expressions in Laws and Regulations
摘要
This chapter delves into the nuanced translation of words and expressions in Chinese laws and regulations, focusing on five core dimensions: the translation of fuzzy legal expressions, which requires balancing flexibility with legal certainty; the translation of legal terms with distinctive Chinese characteristics, necessitating context-sensitive adaptation to convey unique socio-legal concepts; the translation of common terms used in legal texts, where ordinary language assumes specialized meanings; the differentiation and translation of synonyms in legislative language, a critical task for maintaining precision and avoiding ambiguity; and the translation of synonymous or near-synonymous terms, which reflects the stylistic and rhetorical features of Chinese legal drafting. Together, these aspects highlight the complex interplay between linguistic accuracy, legal functionality, and cultural specificity in the translation of Chinese legislative texts.
