Smart and Sustainable Nanomaterials: Challenges, Safety, and Ethical Considerations

Nanotechnology has revolutionized diverse fields through groundbreaking advancements in the design, modeling, fabrication, and characterization of nanomaterials and nanocrystals. Its applications are widespread and include electronics, nanomedicine, food processing, and environmental engineering. The unique properties of nanomaterials, arising from their “nano”-scale dimensions and enhanced stability, have enabled breakthroughs in drug delivery systems, biosensing technologies, and food safety protocols. These advancements hold immense promise for addressing global health disparities, particularly in resource-limited settings, by facilitating early disease diagnosis, efficient drug delivery, and improved patient outcomes. However, these innovations also present significant challenges, including safety concerns, ethical dilemmas, the potential toxicity of nanomaterials, and growing concerns regarding their environmental impact and sustainability. Currently, a considerable gap exists in the formulation of universally accepted standardized protocols and a coherent classification system for developing and understanding various nanomaterials and their mechanisms of action. This inconsistency hinders progress within the field. To fully realize the potential of nanotechnology while mitigating associated risks, it is crucial to implement standardized assessment methodologies, conduct rigorous in vitro and in vivo clinical trials, and foster enhanced collaboration with national and international regulatory agencies. A comprehensive approach is vital, encompassing stringent global safety standards, transparent communication, and thorough ethical review processes. The regulatory landscape surrounding nanomaterials is complex, with varying standards across jurisdictions. Therefore, establishing universal and effective regulatory frameworks is essential to ensure the safety and efficacy of nanomaterials in healthcare, environmental, and food applications. Against this backdrop, this chapter explores the complexities of nanomaterials, focusing on their biomedical applications, the challenges they present, safety issues, and ethical considerations.
