Design and Application of a Driver Reaction Time Measurement System

Road traffic safety has garnered increasing attention due to the rising number of motor vehicles. Driver reaction time, a critical physiological and psychological characteristic, is defined as the interval between the onset of a stimulus and the initiation of a response. In this study, a driver reaction time measurement system was developed within a realistic road scenario using Unity3D. The system was integrated with a driving simulator to collect reaction time data and conduct collision avoidance experiments. Different traffic light configurations served as stimuli, and the time interval between the light change and the driver’s response (e.g., braking or steering) was recorded. Pearson correlation analysis revealed that choice reaction time exhibited the strongest correlation with maximum braking deceleration, indicating that longer reaction times are associated with more urgent braking behavior. These findings validate the reliability of the measurement system and provide a basis for improving road safety through targeted driver training.
