Foods offering health advantages beyond essential nutrition are functional foods and have drawn much interest globally. Nevertheless, the regulatory framework for these items is still varied and intricate. This study thoroughly analyzes the regulatory viewpoints on functional foods worldwide with particular insights from essential markets like Japan, the US, Europe, India, China, and Indonesia. Functional foods are regulated differently in each region, reflecting advances in science. In order to enable global trade and guarantee consumer safety, this study also emphasizes how Codex’s advice attempts to simplify and harmonize functional food requirements. Several regulatory issues hamper the market for functional foods. These include difficulties establishing solid scientific evidence because bioactive components are complex, lengthy approval processes, safety issues, difficulties with health claims, and unclear definitions and classifications that must be clarified for the regulatory process. These barriers impact manufacturers, consumers, market access, and new product development. Since each health benefit must be substantiated by strong scientific evidence, meeting the clinical data required to support these claims creates particular barriers. The study also examines current developments in the functional foods industry, emphasizing technological and product development breakthroughs. The development of functional foods suited to specific populations or health conditions is influenced by technological advancements like bioengineering and personalized nutrition, generating new opportunities for the sector. If these trends and regulatory viewpoints are understood, it will be easier to find solutions to improve regulatory frameworks and encourage the global expansion of functional foods. In order to promote consumer confidence and industry expansion, this analysis offers a roadmap for unified legislation that may address both safety and innovation in the functional foods sector.
