Functional Foods: Definition and Health Benefits

Functional foods are important since they provide a distinctive response by linking nutrition and medicine. Regular consumption of functional foods may be related to improved anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory, insulin sensitivity, and anti-cholesterol activities, each of these is considered essential for preventing and managing type 2 diabetes and other complications. Functional foods like yogurt, fortified milk, whole grains, fortified cereals, berries, citrus fruits, leafy greens, green tea, nuts and seeds, functional drinks and legumes have been reported to have numerous pharmacological activities. Overconsumption of fortified foods can lead to exceeding recommended nutrient limits, posing health concerns. Choosing functional foods, especially fortified ones, requires careful evaluation. This chapter emphasises how crucial it is to include functional foods in regular diets as a preventative measure to enhance general health and lessen the prevalence of different metabolic conditions worldwide.
