From Chinese Characters to Sinographic Scripts: Preliminary Analysis of Developmental Characteristics of Sinographic Scripts

If the dissemination of the Chinese script is traced back to the reign of Qin Shi Huang (third century bce), its spread and use among various peoples has a history spanning over two millennia. The dozen or so scripts derived from Chinese characters have traversed a complex and winding path of development through the vicissitudes of time. While these scripts share common characteristics in their origin and development by virtue of their common foundation in Chinese characters, they simultaneously exhibit significant individual particularities in their evolutionary processes due to differences in the cultural characteristics of various peoples, variations in the depth and breadth of Han cultural influence on each people, and constraints imposed by the socio-historical conditions under which each people created their own scripts based on Chinese characters.
