Historical Development and Formational Characteristics of Sinographic Scripts—Part I: Southern Sinographic Scripts

  • Feng Wang

摘要

Sinographic scripts are the product of close interactions between Han culture and the cultures of various groups. They all developed from the Chinese script through a process of long-term gestation and evolution. This is a fundamental attribute shared by all Sinographic scripts. However, due to differences in cultural characteristics, language typologies, variations in the depth and breadth of Han cultural dissemination in different regions, and constraints of specific socio-historical conditions, the historical development of each Sinographic script possesses its own unique features, exhibiting diverse formational characteristics. The following analysis selects several representative scripts to explore their historical development and formational characteristics.
