Challenges and Barriers in Bioenergy Adoption

Biological waste to bioenergy can be a twofold chance to achieve the needs of renewable energy as well as waste management in the context of the cyclical bioeconomy. Although the conversion technologies and the willingness to promote the policy have made great progress, the overall introduction of waste-based bioenergy is not consistent throughout. In this chapter, the author critically discusses the structural obstacles that limit the implementation of bioenergy beyond technical ability. Among these are heterogeneity of feedstock, process instability scale-related, subsistence of hidden economic and logistical costs, market distortion due to fossil fuel subsidy, regulatory fragmentation, and ultimate gaps in the social acceptance and institutional ability. Using evidence across the world especially in the context of Indian waste-to-energy situation, the chapter draws attention to the lack of alignment amid technology preparedness, policy framework. and socioeconomic realities as the results of implementation. Instead of making bioenergy appear like a universal solution, the analysis focuses on context-based viability and integration systems-level between waste management, energy planning, and the governance structures. The chapter ends with defining the specific avenues of enhancing adoption that can be used to drive bioenergy as a conditional but a strategically significant element of sustainable energy transitions when implemented within evidence-based and coordinated frameworks.
