Bioenergy can effectively replace fossil fuel demands in transportation, industry, utilities, and residential heating globally. In the year 2020, bioenergy accounted for approximately 10% of the worldwide primary energy supply, highlighting its considerable potential. It possesses properties conducive to easy storage and transportation, which coincide with user preferences regarding delivery and storage requirements. Acknowledging its significant potential, governments and organizations have identified energy recovery from bio-based materials as a pivotal policy objective, anticipating a global investment of $200 billion in bioenergy infrastructure by the year 2025. A wide array of biomass feedstocks and related technologies have been extensively investigated. However, challenges such as sustainability concerns within supply chains, elevated production expenses, and technical obstacles associated with plant capabilities impede the commercial implementation of renewable biofuels. Bioenergy, derived from solar energy stored in biomass, is the only renewable carrier widely applied across technology development, biofuel production, and commercial distribution. Its main sources are terrestrial and aquatic plants, yielding about two billion tons of biomass annually, and various methods for harnessing energy from crops, residues, waste, forests, and algae. A range of biomass with different chemical and moisture contents has been processed via pyrolysis to create biochar or bio-oil, with bio-oil production around one million tons per year, which can be upgraded for transportation diesel and other fossil fuel replacements. The conversion of biomass into bio-oil not only provides a renewable source of energy but also plays a crucial role in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, ongoing research aims to enhance the efficiency of the pyrolysis process, optimizing the quality of biochar and expanding its applications in soil amendment and carbon sequestration.
