Improving Lagrangian Velocity Calculations Based on Argo Data in the Black Sea

Combining the results of Argo current velocity calculations with a specialized geographic information system (GIS) developed for the Black Sea enables a more accurate assessment of float drift at parking depths (200 m and deeper) and facilitates the identification of spatiotemporal variability in current velocity within selected sea layers. The GIS enhances the capabilities for current estimation by using floats as Lagrangian tracers, allowing users to select specific sea layers, regions, and/or time periods for velocity calculations. It is also built upon a more comprehensive dataset than those used in previously published studies on similar current assessments, with potential for further expansion of datasets and estimation options. As an example, an analysis of Argo float drift velocities for the period 2005–2025 in several layers of the Black Sea is presented.
