Conditions for Heavy Precipitation on the Crimean Peninsula

The paper presents studies of heavy precipitation on the Crimean Peninsula for the 2010–2019 period. To define extreme precipitation we used an approach where the precipitation volume over a 24-h period exceeds 10% of the annual precipitation volume in a given year. It has been shown that the conditions for extreme precipitation on the peninsula are most often associated with the warm period of the year (81.5%). Extreme precipitation on the Crimean Peninsula is caused by the emergence of Mediterranean cyclones and the passage of cold front sections of varying intensity. It has been found that catastrophic precipitation, which occurs when the annual precipitation volume in a given year exceeds 5%, is rare. The catastrophic precipitation over a large area of the peninsula is associated with the passage of a powerful meridian-oriented cold front. Moreover, catastrophic precipitation at a particular station is associated with the region’s orographic features.
