The coastal and marine wetlands of Sakhalin Island are ecosystems that are currently undergoing intensive natural carbon accumulation (450–930 g C m2 year−1), making this region highly promising for natural climate projects. As part of such a project, the concept of coastal protection solutions in areas of marsh degradation proposes the formation of a framework of muddy drylands raised to the level of halophytic vegetation development using products from forestry enterprises. A model experiment was conducted to assess the suitability and biocompatibility of coniferous logging waste (Picea ajanensis, Larix leptolepis, Abies sachalinensis) for such structures. The presence of highly toxic compounds in wood waste was established, the targeted analysis of which is absent in state regulatory documents. Immersion of A. sachalinensis wood led to the leaching of todomatinic acid into salt water in concentrations causing 100% mortality of Artemia salina. Based on the results obtained, the most promising type of terraforming of muddy shoals is the use of P. ajanensis logging waste.
