This chapter delves into the advancements in alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) breeding and genomics, exploring the historical evolution of alfalfa cultivars and the shift from traditional breeding methods to modern genomic techniques. Alfalfa, known as the “Queen of Forages,” is a critical crop for livestock due to its high protein content and environmental adaptability. The chapter outlines the integration of molecular breeding techniques such as marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection (GS), which have revolutionized the breeding process by enabling the precise identification and selection of desirable traits. It also highlights the role of advanced biotechnological approaches, including CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, in enhancing stress tolerance, yield, and nutritional quality in alfalfa. The challenges of implementing these technologies, including high costs, complex trait architectures, and regulatory hurdles, are discussed.
