Genome Editing and Forage Crops

Forage crops are vital for livestock nutrition and agricultural sustainability. However, they face many challenges such as diseases, pests, climate change, and low yields. Genome editing technology has emerged as an important tool that promises fixing these challenges by increasing tolerance to abiotic stress and diseases and improving nutritional quality and yield. This revolutionary technology can be applied to improve the genetic characteristics of plants, including forage crops. This chapter examines the progress, applications, and difficulties in genome editing technologies. Significant accomplishments in genome editing such as an increase in protein content, reduction of anti-nutritional elements, and enhancing resistance to drought and salinity will be discussed thoroughly. Genome editing together with genomic selection and synthetic biology has accelerated generation of climate-resilient forage crops. Even though there is a great potential in adoption of genome editing technology issues such as off-target mutations and regulatory obstacles, public acceptance slows down the process. There is an immediate necessity for international cooperation and technology-friendly legislation for this technology to progress and achieve its full potential. This chapter defends the idea of improving and implementing genome editing in forage crops and in agriculture as a whole in order to preserve the environment and provide global security.
