Breeding Success in Forage Crops

The breeding of forage crops is highly susceptible to the risks of lack of attention due to the numerous challenges and dilemmas associated with the vast array of species that can be bred, desired traits, target environments, crop uses, breeding procedures, and seed markets. Additionally, contrasting demands from farmers, the seed industry, and the society further exacerbate the situation. Although there have been many successful outcomes in fodder crop breeding, it is common to encounter challenges due to a lack of proper attention. They have incorporated several forms of inconsistency between the chosen environments and the desired outcomes, neglecting significant characteristics such as seed yield or employing poor methods of selecting multiple features, and not fully utilizing the available genetic diversity, among other issues. This chapter examines conventional breeding strategies in addition to modern biotechnological tools, including genetic engineering and marker-assisted selection, emphasizing their role in improving pasture crop varieties. An essential factor in maximizing the effectiveness of grassland systems is to maximize the protein/energy ratio of forage and assign it a comparable value to other types of animal feed. Grasses contain a high amount of energy in the form of both structural and nonstructural carbohydrates, whereas forage legumes are abundant in protein. The selection of a species with one or more evident phenotypic restrictions or deficits, such as weak seedling vigor, production of harmful alkaloids, or high vulnerability to a significant pest, often determines the breeding aims in advance. For species that do not have these restrictions, breeders have the advantage of establishing breeding goals that are less strict and more adaptable.
