Recent Advancements in Breeding and Genomics of Orchardgrass
摘要
Grassland pastures are essential for livestock production, supporting animal health, productivity, and rural economies. Wheat fodder crops, such as orchardgrass, are vital because of their versatility, substantial biomass yield, and nutritional advantages. These are well-known cold climate–growing crops. Orchardgrass is a moisture-loving species, it yields more in moist conditions, needs less water, and plays a crucial role in enhancing ecological stability and soil health. Its roots are soil which plays a major role in its stability and helps to prevent soil erosion, improve water retention capacity of soil, and facilitate carbon sequestration. It is known as a key plant for solving abiotic constraints. Due to its extensive genetic variety availability, it has been successfully improved by employing of breeding tools that make use of cutting-edge molecular technology. Recent advancement in genomic methodologies, including marker-assisted selection, genome-wide association studies (GWAS), and Next generation Sequencing (NGS), which have helped in the breeding of fast, better yielded, and resistance and more tolerant plants. These developed plants have been able to meet the requirements of shifting agricultural systems and climatic circumstances. The stability and livestock feed choice for better food make it more popular to the orchardgrass for rapid breeding to develop more and more biomass. This chapter fully defines all the characteristics related to breeding and further advances the research on orchardgrass to develop better varieties.
