摘要

Forage crops play a pivotal role in global agriculture, serving as a primary source of nutrition for livestock. These crops, comprising grasses, legumes, and other herbaceous species, contribute significantly to sustainable livestock farming by ensuring a continuous supply of feed. Forage can be utilized in various forms, including direct grazing, hay, silage, and haylage, to meet seasonal feed demands. The importance of forage crops extends beyond animal nutrition, as they also enhance soil fertility, prevent erosion, and contribute to carbon sequestration, making them an essential component of agroecosystems. Globally, forage crop production varies due to climatic conditions, agronomic practices, and livestock management systems. While developed nations have well-established forage production systems supported by advanced breeding programs and mechanization, developing countries face challenges such as low yield potential, lack of improved cultivars, and inadequate storage facilities. With the increasing demand for animal products, optimizing forage crop production through improved genetics, sustainable agronomic practices, and efficient feed management strategies is critical. This chapter provides an overview of the significance of forage crops, their global status, and future prospects in ensuring food security and sustainable livestock production.
