Design and Optimization of Automobile Exhaust Muffler
摘要
Automobile noise is a significant contributor to environmental noise pollution, which has prompted the development of exhaust mufflers. These mufflers are primarily designed to diminish the noise generated by vehicles and adhere to regulatory standards. However, while their principal function is to reduce noise, they can also present other issues. For instance, backpressure within the exhaust muffler can negatively affect the overall efficiency of the car engine, potentially impacting performance beyond just noise reduction. It is exceedingly challenging to accomplish the highest noise reduction with the least amount of pressure loss. This project will investigate the baffle cut ratio on the double outlet exhaust muffler with the pressure loss analysis and transmission loss analysis. For this project, a standard exhaust system from a Hyundai i120 is employed. The double outlet exhaust muffler is designed using SolidWorks software, while Ansys software is utilized for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to analyse fluid flow and transmission loss. Optimised model selection was identified which is Model B with baffle cut ratio of 0.50. Model B with 51.09% improvement in pressure loss and decrease of sound level of 35.299 dB.
