Thermal Management of Electric Motors: A Preliminary Study on Rotating Heat Pipe Systems

The increasing use of electric vehicles has highlighted the need for efficient thermal management of electric motors. This study explores the impact of a Rotating Heat Pipe (RHP) cooling system on the thermal efficiency of electric motors. The research involves multiple phases, beginning with a comprehensive review of existing literature to understand RHP principles and benefits, as well as the operational characteristics of electric motors. Using CAD models, a prototype was designed to incorporate thermocouples for accurate temperature measurement. The prototype was built and calibrated to ensure precise measurement accuracy. Experiments were conducted with varying motor rotations, using thermocouples to measure operational temperatures. Data analysis revealed temperature change patterns and analyzed input parameters such as heat load and motor speed against outputs like temperature variations in the RHP, heat transmission, and thermal resistance of electric motors. The results showed that the RHP system significantly enhances the thermal efficiency of electric motors. Specific conditions altered operating temperatures, affecting heat transfer and thermal resistance. The study indicates that RHP systems can improve thermal efficiency, contributing significantly to energy efficiency and thermal management in electric motors. These findings have broad implications for the electric vehicle industry and lay the groundwork for further research and development of advanced heat management technologies to ensure optimal motor performance and durability.
