Antibiotic abuse, characterized by the overuse and misuse of antibiotics, has emerged as a critical driver of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), posing a global health crisis. Surveillance systems for monitoring antibiotic abuse play a pivotal role in mitigating this challenge. The review aims at the future prospects of antibiotic abuse surveillance, emphasizing the transformative potential of biosensor technologies. Biosensors, with their ability to provide rapid, sensitive, and cost-effective diagnostics, offer a promising avenue for real-time monitoring of antibiotic use patterns in clinical, agricultural, and environmental settings. This explores cutting-edge developments in biosensor design, including advancements in nanotechnology, microfluidics, and artificial intelligence, which enhance detection capabilities and data analytics. Additionally, it highlights the integration of biosensor-based surveillance with digital health platforms to facilitate large-scale data collection and analysis. Case studies from diverse regions illustrate successful implementations and their contributions to informed policy decisions. However, it concludes with an assessment of challenges, such as accessibility, scalability, and regulatory frameworks, and provides a roadmap for overcoming these barriers.
