Impact of Pollination of Bumblebees and the Productivity of Polyhouse Crops

Among the insect pollinators, honeybees and bumblebees are recognized as efficient pollinators. Crops that honeybees typically cannot pollinate are successfully pollinated by bumblebees. The population of insect pollinators has been falling recently, and several species of bumblebees are in danger of extinction, mainly prevalent in temperate regions. Bumblebees are more advantageous than honeybees as pollinating agents since pollinators frequent higher number of flowers in a minute, prefer blooms with lengthy corolla, and undertake buzz pollination. The majority of species prefer quiet, dark places to build nests, and the bumblebee queen often hibernates before establishing a colony in the spring. This chapter furnishes information on bumblebees’ life cycle, biology, and pollination preferences and efficiency in agricultural crops grown under protected cultivation.
