Analysis and Optimized Protection Methodology in a Microgrid with Integrations of Multiple PVs: Case Studies

For a microgrid with multiple PVs, the fault current characteristics and relay protection under fault conditions are investigated. Analysis of fault current features is carried out for different fault positions. Meanwhile, positive/ negative-sequence network models for the microgrid are built. An evaluation index of relay protection in the microgrid against faults is proposed with justifications of the relay protection under different fault locations. On the basis of the assessed fault current behaviors, the strengths and limitations of several PVs grid-interconnection strategies are examined. After that, a microgrid model taking multiple PVs integration into account is constructed based on the Power System-CAD (PSCAD) platform to analyze the fault current features and the performance of the relay protection at different fault positions by means of simulation. Comparative case studies of the relay protection performance are conducted between microgrids with the interconnection of PV in different forms.
