Opportunities and Challenges in STEM Education in the Era of AI

STEM education is essential in helping students develop necessary skills, but its impact hinges on designing and implementing high-quality STEM materials. Educators can use artificial intelligence (AI) to design and implement these materials. While AI presents many opportunities in STEM education, it also poses several challenges. The chapter highlights how advancements in AI technology can enhance the STEM learning experiences of students through personalized learning opportunities and increasing student engagement and motivation. It also discusses how teachers can integrate AI in their classrooms to facilitate interdisciplinary connections, expand access to STEM education, and assist instructors in assessing students’ work throughout the teaching-learning process. The challenges include limited resources, gaps in access to AI technology, the need for teacher preparedness and professional development, ethical and privacy concerns, and research and implementation gaps. Additionally, this chapter offers practical insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers to promote innovation and equity in STEM education.
