Formalin Chamber for Laparoscopic Instruments

.The formalin chamber is a traditional, low-cost method used for high-level disinfection of heat-sensitive surgical instruments such as laparoscopes, cystoscopes, and cables. It utilizes formaldehyde vapours generated from formalin solution or paraformaldehyde tablets within a sealed chamber to achieve antimicrobial activity. Widely adopted in resource-limited settings, particularly in developing regions, this method gained popularity due to its simplicity and affordability. Formaldehyde acts by alkylating proteins and nucleic acids, providing a broad antimicrobial spectrum; however, its sporicidal efficacy at room temperature remains limited. Despite its historical significance, the formalin chamber suffers from major drawbacks, including lack of standardization, inadequate penetration into lumens, toxic residues, and significant occupational health hazards. Regulatory bodies such as WHO and CDC discourage its use for sterilization. With advancements in sterilization technologies, the formalin chamber is increasingly being replaced by safer, standardized alternatives in modern surgical practice.
