Recent Advances in Proteases from Halophilic Bacteria

Protease are important groups of enzymes in biotechnology. In the past, most industries were dependent on proteases, which were mesophilic in nature which remained nonfunctional in the presence of stressful environmental conditions. The invention of extreme microbes, specifically those are under halophilic bacteria, is source of commercially important halophilic enzymes. This chapter deals with the introduction and significance of the subject of enzymology with/in extremely halophilic bacteria. It also unveils how globally, studies on halophilic bacteria are taken up as front-line research to study extracellular halophilic proteases, keeping in mind their biotechnological application. A brief account of the production methodology used in harnessing proteases and their characterization are described, Furthermore, this chapter highlights the contribution of genetic engineering and synthetic biology for advancements in overproduction and challenges on purification and research opportunities. This comprehensive study will represent the choice of salt-stable proteases for various industrial biotransformation as well as biocatalytic processes in biotechnological applications.
