Proteases have revolutionized the detergent industry by offering eco-efficient and high-performance alternatives to traditional chemical-based cleaners. This chapter presents a comprehensive overview of the historical evolution, biochemical mechanisms, and industrial applications of proteases in detergents. Microbial alkaline proteases, especially those from Bacillus species, are widely used for their ability to break down protein-based stains under alkaline and high-temperature conditions. The evolution of enzyme technology—from natural extracts to engineered enzymes—has enhanced protease stability, substrate specificity, and performance in detergent formulations.
