Exploring the Multifaceted Applications of Microbial Proteases in Dermatology and Cosmetics

The fields of dermatology and cosmetics seek microbial proteases as alternative treatments because these enzymes provide flexible and sustainable solutions for skin and hair care. Microorganisms, including bacteria, fungi, and yeasts, produce proteolytic enzymes through which they split proteins, which drive fundamental biological processes, including tissue reshaping, protein recycling, and cell regulation. The biochemical features of these agents, which include substrate specificity alongside thermostability, together with adaptability to multiple biotechnological methods, make them essential for fulfilling diverse requirements in cosmetic and therapeutic applications. The application of enzyme exfoliation through microbial proteases leads to dead cell elimination, which produces a better skin look and starts the regenerative process. The skin healing process, along with scar reduction and anti-ageing treatments, benefits from enzymes that include collagenases and keratinases since these enzymes boost collagen production and enhance skin elasticity. Proteases control melanin formation, which helps address skin problems, including hyperpigmentation and skin tone unevenness, and keratinases restore damaged hair structure while strengthening it. These proteases demonstrate medical potential for treating dermatological conditions, including acne, psoriasis, and xerosis, through specific protein targeting of disease-related proteins. Nanotechnology, along with enzyme engineering and delivery technologies, has enhanced protease stability and specificity and overall functionality, which allows their wider use. However, certain challenges persist. To manage enzyme instability and skin irritation potential, together with allergenic reactions, thorough evaluation and management are required. Staphylococcus aureus and Streptococcus pyogenes–derived proteases from pathogens increase skin inflammation, thus requiring controlled use with strict safety assessments. Despite challenges, microbial proteases represent a transformative advancement that brings new possibilities for skincare and cosmetics. The chapter examines their natural and sustainable features and current research and technological development to create innovative validated solutions for contemporary dermatological and cosmetic problems.
