Research on the Effect of Traffic Capacity of Lane Width Under Mixed Two-Wheelers Traffic Conditions of Urban Intersection in China

摘要

This study proposes a new method for estimating two-wheeler units (TWUs) for mixed traffic conditions, which comprehensively considers multidimensional parameters such as vehicle area, length, and speed, rather than relying solely on a single length indicator. The research data was collected from six urban non-motorised vehicle lanes in multiple regions of China, with selected lane widths (referring to the total width of the road surface, excluding shoulders) ranging from 2.7 m to 5.0 m. It is imperative to consider the diverse range of vehicle models in order to categorise them into three distinct classifications. This classification is essential for the subsequent estimation of their respective TWU values. The research findings indicate a substantial positive correlation between the TWU value of a specific vehicle category and lane width. That is to say, as the lane width increases, the TWU value also increases accordingly. This phenomenon can be explained by the improved manoeuvrability of vehicles on wider roads, thereby exacerbating the speed differences between different vehicle models. In addition, the capacity of non-motorised vehicle lanes increases with the total width of the lane, and the optimal fit between the two is a quadratic curve model. Based on this model, this study further derived the adjustment coefficient of traffic capacity under unconventional lane width, and compared and verified the results with the reported values in existing literature.
