A Survey on Willingness to Use the Speed Guidance Function for Connected Vehicles at Intersections

As one of the most typical and easily achievable scenarios in vehicle-road collaboration technology, speed guidance for connected vehicles (CV) at intersections has great practical value and potential demand in the future. This article aims to study people's willingness to use the speed guidance function through survey of questionnaire and field experiments, and provide reference and inspiration for the application of this function. The survey results show that most respondents have realized that vehicle’s queuing at intersections can lead to many problems, such as increased energy consumption, high risk of rear-end collisions, and poor comfort. And they consciously adjust their speed according to traffic light countdown information in daily driving to avoid these problems. However, drivers’ speed adjustments based on subjective perception and judgment are often ineffective, so respondents generally expect specialized speed guidance functions to assist them to better pass through intersections. Based on the survey of questionnaire, in order to further understand people's feelings and willingness to use speed guidance in practice, this study conducted field experiments of speed guidance at an intersection in Yili Modern Smart Health Valley located in the western part of the central urban area of Hohhot. The results showed that in low traffic flow, the speed guidance function can assist drivers to pass through the intersection without stopping in most cases. Generally, driver participated in the experiments expresses good experience with the speed guidance function and are very willing to use it in the future when the vehicle-road collaboration technology is applied in practice.
