Knowledge Management in Virtual Work Environments

The Indian gig economy is one of the fastest-growing gig economies in the world, and this is especially because of the increasing on-demand opportunities being created for the knowledge workers at Internet firms and one of the largest pools of tech talent possessed by India. This paper aims to explore and deliberate the position of India in the global landscape of knowledge work practiced by the tech talent and the upsurge of the Indian gig economy with special reference to pre- and post-pandemic scenarios. The shifting of flexible jobbing trends from America to India has also been examined to understand the foundation of these phenomena and their scenarios of growth in both economies. In addition, the development and progression of portfolio careers due to the increasing trends of gig working and side-hustling by knowledge workers is also examined. Finally, the conclusion to all the implications of gig working and side-hustling practices, recommendations to the organizations and government to ensure social security and equity of this non-standard workforce, and future directions have also been discussed.
