Construction Worker Risk Perception Factors and Measurement Methods

Construction is one of the most hazardous industries, contributing to a high rate of work-related injuries and fatalities. A significant factor contributing to these accidents is the construction workers’ varied levels of perceptions of risks, which often lead to underestimating the risks. To mitigate the effect of underestimating risk, several researchers are extensively exploring this dynamic concept of construction worker risk perception. However, there is currently a lack of a comprehensive review that identifies the influencing factors and measurement methods related to risk perception applied within the construction industry. This study presents a systematic review of the literature on construction worker risk perception and specifically examines the factors affecting risk perception and the measurement method employed. Based on the analysis, the study identifies key factors that influence risk perception and categorizes them into personal and organizational factors. Measurement methods related to construction worker risk perception range from simple questionnaires to advanced techniques, such as brain signals. Furthermore, the review uncovers pertinent research challenges and proposes future research directions to address these gaps. The findings of this study contribute to advancing research on construction worker risk perception and ultimately aim to improve the health and safety of the workers.
