Applications of the 5th-Generation Wireless Network in the South African Construction Industry

摘要

Leveraging advanced features such as ultra-reliable low latency communications (URLLC), enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB), and massive machine-type communications (MMTC), 5G technology facilitates real-time monitoring, resource optimisation, and improved safety. This study explores the applications of 5th-generation (5G) wireless networks in the South African construction industry, highlighting their potential to drive innovation. Data for this study were collected through structured questionnaires targeting construction professionals and ICT stakeholders in Johannesburg, Gauteng, and analysed using quantitative techniques such as mean item score, exploratory factor analysis, and standard deviation. Findings revealed that object detection using convolutional neural networks, waste management tracking, holographic visualisation through augmented reality, and automated construction processes are the key applications of 5th-generation wireless networks in the South African construction industry. The study emphasised the need for targeted investments in infrastructure, enhanced stakeholder collaboration, and capacity-building initiatives to overcome these barriers. This research provides actionable insights into integrating 5G networks within the construction sector, underscoring their role in fostering innovation, enhancing productivity, and achieving sustainability. The study concludes by recommending strategies for addressing adoption challenges and calls for further research to explore the long-term implications of 5G in transforming construction workflows and industry practices in South Africa.
