Fuel Properties Characterization of Higher Alcohol Octanol-Diesel Fuel

The diesel engine’s emission and performance features are impacted when oxygen-rich fuel, such as alcohols, is added to the basic diesel fuel. Octanol is a higher alcohol and has various benefits, making it suitable for use in diesel engines. Therefore, before using a fuel mix containing octanol and diesel in various ratios in an engine, it is crucial to ascertain its physical and chemical qualities. The parameters of the created fuel mixes are then compared with those of normal diesel fuel with the objective of approximating their features. The current study assessed the fuel’s qualities using a mix made of 5, 10, 15, and 20% octanol on a volumetric basis with diesel fuel, and a comparison was made with diesel. The manufactured fuel was subjected to several tests, including flash point, fire point, kinematic viscosity, density, carbon residue, heating values and FTIR analysis. The results found from the test were compared with EN 590 standards and these features offer compelling justifications for the engine’s behavior, combustion, and emission features while using certain fuels. The results show that raising the volume percent of octanol improves the density and kinematic viscosity of fuel. However, pure diesel has a higher density value than the mix and pure octanol. Additionally, the heating value of the blends with the maximum for pure diesel was lowered by increasing the volume percentage of octanol in diesel.
